Chapter Twenty Five

I was threading my way down the busy hallway when someone grabbed my arm. I almost yelped, still keyed up from last night’s encounter with Ethan. But the hand was warm, and when I turned, it was Ryan.

That wasn’t much better, to be honest.

“What is it?” I snapped.

He looked hurt, dropping my elbow. “Oh, sorry. “

I rubbed at my arm, choosing to ignore that he’d grabbed me. “What’s up?”

“I just wanted to see if you wanted to come over tonight,” he said. “Do some homework together. Visit the cat.”

“Visit the cat?”

He shifted his weight from one foot to another. “Yeah. Visit the cat. You were all in love with her and now you never come over, you never see her, you don’t even ask how she’s doing.”

“That’s because I know she’s good,” I said patiently. “She’s with you.”

“Thanks,” he said.

We stood there for a minute awkwardly. “Well,” I said. “I should get to class.”

“So are you coming over?” he asked.

I tried to smile, to make my tone teasing, even though I still hadn’t forgiven him for last night. “That’s quite the invitation, Ryan. Hard to resist.”

“Could you just act like a normal person for five minutes?” he asked. “Talk to me?”

I turned on my heel and headed for class. In the wrong direction.

I saw Ryan again as I was making my way across the school parking lot and quickly averted my eyes, hoping he wouldn’t see me. But I saw him glance towards me as I looked away, and a second later, he called my name.

I stopped and turned. “Hi, Ryan,” I said.

“Oh, that tone,” he said. “The tone that says you’re just tolerating me today.”

“Well, it was a pretty dick move, getting your mom to tattle on me.”

“How long were you going to stay out of school for?” he asked mildly. “Because I’m not sure that would have worked out well in the long run.”

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I haven’t seen much of you lately,” he said. “Which seems weird, given that I’m your sole remaining friend.”

“Okay, seriously?” I asked. “Drop dead.”

“Sam, wait,” he said, following me as I headed towards my car. “It was just a joke. Where’s your sense of humor?”

“Probably waiting for me along with my non-existent friends,” I said.

“I’m trying to help,” he said. “That’s all. That’s why I want you to come over and see Pretty—“

“Are you still seriously calling the cat that?”

“Yes, I am, because you named her!” he said. “Why would you name her and act like you cared and then never check in on her again?”

“You’re not really mad about the cat!” I exploded.

“I didn’t say I was mad,” he said. “But if I was, it wouldn’t be just about the cat.”

“What do you have to be mad about?” I asked. “I don’t see what it has to do with you if I skip school for a couple of days.”

“Of course you don’t,” he said.
